Mississippi Beaumont, Mibs for short, is turning thirteen years old. In the Beaumont family thirteen is special but not for the reasons one would think. At thirteen their savvy is revealed, Mibs has one brother that can cause hurricanes and another that can create electricity, the excitement of finding out her savvy is intoxicating.
Mib's birthday is forgotten when Poppa is in a serious accident. Her mother and older brother are now at a vigil at Poppa's bedside at a hospital that is hours away. Mibs hopes her savvy is powerful and will save her Poppa. She sneaks on a rickety pink bus with her siblings and the preachers children to get to hitch a ride to her Poppa's bedside. Unfortunately, the bus turns in the opposite direction of the hospital and the kids begin a journey that is sure to change everyone.
This Newbery honor book is reminiscent of Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn Dixie, where an unlikely group of people come together as friends to create a coming of age story that is difficult to put down.
